Hawk deals
Pat hits the dirt at third
While Saturday was an ugly win for the Baseball Sharks, it
was still a win. In this game, Landmark would finally find itself with a
lead, after having to come back in the first three games this season.
John Weinkam and Pat McKenna walked to lead off the game and Nick Hanners
doubled to give Landmark a two run lead before an out had been recorded.
Hanners was later driven in by Chris Hawkins on an RBI single.
Then hits it again at home. Safe!
Landmark would score another run in the 4th and 5th on a
wild pitch and an RBI single by Pat Mckenna.
Eli makes tough play in right.
Down 5 to 1 in the sixth, Keene rallied. Two errors and a
double saw the once formidable lead dwindle to 5 to 3. Pitcher Chris
Hawkins was able to squeak through the inning without allowing further
damage. "Hawk" then slammed the door himself in the seventh by striking
out the final three batters of the game.
Stands get ready for the Wave.
"Hawk" went the distance, going all seven innings allowing
0 earned runs. He struck out 7 batters while allowing only 4 hits and 1
walk, earning Player of the Game honors.
Great Game Guys
In a game where Landmark was missing it's starting left
fielder and shortstop, Landmark came together as a team to overcome three
errors and 13 total strikeouts and come away with the win, proving that
their talent runs far deeper than just the starting 9.
Baseball Sharks Win 10th Straight in Come-From-Behind Victory Over Saxton's River Pirates
Landmark baseball found themselves down, yet again, in the first inning of
their game against the Saxton's River Pirates. Playing in a beautiful new
complex in Walpole, NH, Landmark came out overwhelmed and anxious. Two
Landmark errors in the first inning led to a quick 4 run deficit.
Defensive Indifference?
It was the 3rd inning when Landmark came storming back. 4 singles in a
row (Chris Hawkins, Tom Sansone, Will Meinan, and EJ Johnson) led to 3
runs. Later in the same inning a single by Jacob Tobin and a walk to Dan
Brutlag led to a booming 2 RBI triple by catcher Nick Hanners. This would
put the Sharks up 5-4.
Rounding third and comin' home
Landmark piled on in the very next inning. Second baseman John Weinkam
led it off with a single and stolen base followed by two quick fly outs.
With two outs, star of the game Will "Junior" Meinan singled to left field
to chase Weinkam in. Junior would add another single later in the game to
give him a solid 3 for 3 day with an RBI and 2 runs scored, earning him
Player of the Game honors. Two more singles and an error found more
runners in and more men on base when Jacob Tobin came up big with a 2 RBI
double. Landmark was now in control of a 9-4 lead.
You "chest bump" Big Sexy and you pay the price.
Patrick O'Mealia had the start on the mound but was lifted early due to
lower back soreness. Out of the bullpen came Pat McKenna who threw 5 2/3
strong innings. "Patty Cakes" collected 7 strikeouts while giving up only
two runs and walking none. In the final inning, though McKenna grew tired
and Landmark quickly saw a 9-4 lead turn into a 9-7 lead. Coach Wood and
Coach Stanley then elected to bring in closer EJ Johnson who slammed the
rally door shut. With men on first and second and none out Chris Hawkins
made the defensive play of the game by fielding a grounder, stepping on
third for the force out, and then throwing to first to complete the double
play. An easy grounder to second would end the rally, and the game with a
final 9-7 victory.
Next game Saturday April 21, Dummerston/Landmark field at 11:00 AM. On Sunday we have a game VS Pirates at 2:00 PM at Vermont Academy.
Sharks Sweep Double Header Saturday
Back Row: Coach Stanley, Jacob Tobin, Nick Hanners, Patrick
O'Mealia, Pat McKenna, Eli Cox, EJ Johnson, Coach Wood
Second Row: Chris Hawkins, Matt (Big Sexy) Davis, Tom
Sansone, John Weinkam, Dan Brutlag
Front Row: Will (Junior) Meinan and Dale Smith
Our Landmark Sharks took the field against the vaunted Putney Fossils last Saturday. The Fossils have been in the CRVBL league for over ten years and sported an experienced and talented squad. Landmark hit the field with more rookies than 2nd year men. But experience? We have it in Coaches Steve Stanley and John Wood.
EJ Johnson takes a lead
Down 4-0 in the third inning, the Sharks came storming back
with 1 run in the fifth and then 6 runs in the sixth to win 7-5. Jacob
Tobin had a double and 2 RBIs while Dan Brutlag and newcomer Nick Hanners
each collected 2 hits and an RBI. The Sharks put on a base stealing
clinic, with five different people collecting stolen bases, including two
by leadoff hitter and shortstop EJ Johnson.
Chris Hawkins had a solid start going five innings allowing
4 runs, only 1 of which was earned. His pitching line rounds out with 9
strikeouts and 3 walks, while allowing 7 hits. EJ Johnson ended the game
with a save, going the final 2 innings allowing 1 run and striking out 1.
Patrick O'Mealia takes off on steal attempt
Game two of the double header found the Sharks down again.
By the middle of the Third inning Landmark was down 3-0, but came right
back in the next half inning with two runs of their own. EJ Johnson
started the rally with two outs with a single and then moved to second
on the Putney shortstop (Associate Dean of Students, Greg Narleski's)
throwing error. Johnson then scored on Pat Mckenna's double, who scored
soon after on Jacob Tobin's double.
!st baseman waits for throw from second while pitcher searches for contact lens
With strong pitching and defense, Putney would not score
again. The same can not be said for Landmark who scored three more runs
in the bottom half of the sixth. Most impressively, this rally AGAIN
occurred with two outs. Newcomer Patrick O'Mealia hit a hard single with
Jacob Tobin on second (who had earlier singled and moved up on a wild
pitch) to tie the game at three. With O'Mealia on first Chris Hawkins
singled to put runners on first and second. In a stroke of coaching
genius, Stanley and Wood send Tom Sansone to the plate as a pinch hitter
who quickly rewarded them with a booming, two RBI, double to give Landmark
the lead for good.
Groupies on hand to cheer for Big Sexy
Nick Hanners pitched 5 strong innings allowing 3 earned
runs and striking out 3. Pat McKenna then came in and impressively shut
the door for the last two innings, striking out one, only allowing 1 hit,
and walking none.
Big Sexy While AD J. Austin taking pictures near the third baseline Dan Brutlag made it to third with 2 out and Landmark trailing by one. The Fossil third baseman, a scurvy lad to be sure, attempted the old "hidden ball trick". Third base coach Steve Stanley was blissfully unaware of the skullduggery. AD Austin hissed at Stanley to twig to the low rent legerdemain. Stanley then warned Brut to stay on the bag and the treachery was foiled. Brut eventually scored and kept the rally alive. Austin had won the game for Landmark. What a hero!

Basketball Captains Unveil New Landmark Logo on Magic Masters Night Dean Luciani opened the ceremonies on the Friday of parent's weekend by introducing the Magic Master's crowd to Landmark's new logo. A breeching white-tipped shark over a Landmark College sign now adorns the gym wall and the gym doors. Look for our new shark on apparel in the bookstore and tattooed to the skin of selected alumni. The ceremony was followed by another in a series of Magical Magic Master's evenings. The men and women of our basketball teams had a ball as they tried to defend the antics of Muggsy the dribbling maniac and Speedy the mouthpiece of the team. Lots of slam dunks, fancy passes and audience participation had the crowd in stitches. Once again the Magic Masters gave Landmark a great evening. A glance into the crowd showed every face with a huge smile. They have always been the most popular and welcome guests at Parent's weekend.

Overflow crowd hides a Magic Master Indoor Soccer Highlights Sports Scene at LC The interim between basketball and baseball is not an idle time for Landmark Athletes. Since Feb. 21 Landmark has competed against area teams at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield MA. In the early days of the indoor soccer program the thought was to have a fun time and to keep the athletes in shape. That it wasn't taken seriously showed in our results. Big time defeats were the order of the day. At Indoor Action teams from UMASS, Keene State and other serious venues show up with a competitive agenda. Landmark was a punching bag for them. No more. Coach Rob Swinton has insisted on his players taking the game seriously. He insists on attendance at practice and focused performance at game time. The first two games of the season resulted in two losses 3 - 0 and 4 - 3. The obvious improvement from game 1 to game 2 can only continue. Look for some wins in our future. All games are Tuesday evening at Indoor Action Sports Center. Get off I-91 at the first exit in MA and turn right at the end of the ramp. Go left at the "T" junction and follow the road 2 miles until Indoor Action on the left.

Cole of Landmark and Diltz of Lakes Region Open the Tournament Before describing a single play or mentioning a name it must be acknowledged that though Lincoln College tore through their opposition like spit through a goose they did it with consummate class. Their first game at noon VS Sarah Lawrence illustrated the point. After about 5 minutes of play it was clear that the SL guys could not compete against Lincoln. Not one player on the Lincoln team tried to show up the game but less talented Sarah Lawrence squad. They stopped shooting 3-pointers and fast breaking. Every time down the court was designed as a half court offense. The final score of 89 - 23 could have been much worse.
One of the Iverson clones hits another jumper in final After Lakes Region beat Landmark by 83 - 64. Lakes Region advanced to the championship game VS Lincoln College. The expectation of a barn burner was in the air. Instead Lincoln just thrashed Lakes from start to finish. Once again the 72 - 36 win by Lakes region could have been much worse had the coaches wanted to run up the score. There was however, little chance of that happening. These young men must know what it's like to compete and lose and rather than taking out past losses on current opponents they showed empathy and class til' the end. One courtside wag said it was like watching 6 Allan Iverson's and one Grant Hill on the court. In addition these guys couldn't have been happier with their victory. They showed great interest in returning to defend their title next year. However, we may have to invite the Celtics as well to give them some competition.
Kneeling: Marcus Marshall (#23), Gregory Daniels (#35). Back L to R: Assistant Coach Chris Dierkens, Conrad Booker, Howell McFarlane, Che McCoy, Matthew Correa, Sean Douglas, Kevin Smith, Head Coach John Wasielewski. Unofficially the player of the game was Marcus Marshall of Lincoln. He seemed able to score at will from beyond the arc as well as inside. He made two rafter rattling dunks over the course of the tournament. The first was an alley-oop from the point guard which he grabbed with two hands and drilled. The second and even more impressive saw Marshal standing in the paint, receiving a pass and emphatically slamming the ball home from a standing start. This guy is maybe 6' 1".
Marcus Marshall Well, enough about championship games and slam dunks. Let's talk about Landmark! We had a pretty good tournament. The tip off at 10 AM had our guys facing their recent nemesis Lakes Region Community College out of Laconia NH. (In fact this year's tournament featured teams representing 4 different states. Landmark - Vermont, Lakes Region - New Hampshire, Sarah Lawrence - New York and Lincoln - Connecticut.) After building a lead in the early going the game followed a familiar script. We lost to LR by the same total (19) as we did when we played in Laconia. The big gun for Lakes #23 Diltz hit 4 3-pointers in a row, missed one and then shot two more. Every time a Landmark guard got in his face he would hit a cutter or just step back and drill another one. Good player, very annoying.
Patrick MacKinnon owned this space Pat MacKinnon, Jon Getz and Jerome Cole held high score honors with 10, 15 and 17 respectively. MacKinnon, above every player on the floor was as tough as an old boot as he fought tooth and claw throughout the game for every rebound possible. Jon Getz also showed heart and toughness as he took his place in the paint and put up 9 points in the second half to go with 6 in the first.
"Jerome Cole heads to the hole" (poetically speaking) This loss lead to our appearance in the consolation round versus Sarah Lawrence. SL's coach clearly had an animated chat with his lads after the Lincoln game. They came out swinging and played aggressively and one hundred per cent better in the consolation round. They chalked up 10 team fouls in the first half which was just what they needed to get their teeth in the game. In the end they couldn't compete with Landmark's size and talent advantage. MacKinnon once again parked himself in the paint for 18 points, two by foul shot and 16 with put backs. Getz went on a 3-point tear and garnered 15 points. Ziggy weighed in with 6 along with Noah while Indarose drained 8 in Landmark's 64 -57 victory. The fans got into the game at half time of the two Landmark Games. Missy Harris of the women's team and Ryan O'Connor a Landmark alum both earned $50 for sinking shots in the three point competition.
$50 smile from Missy One other highlight of the tourney was the terrific turnout of Alumni. Austin Huettl not only showed up but took over the scorers table and did all 4 tournament games. Thanks Austin.

Shark Women Take Victory Lap
Check out the fouls. This game was tough. Congrats to Coach Stanley, Coach Wood and all the women who hung in there to take a win over Putney School last Friday afternoon. It was a hard-nosed game from start to finish with plenty of Landmark and Putney fans in the crowd cheering their women on. Landmark came out firing and took an early lead which lasted well into the second half. When Putney came back and took a three point lead with about 5 minutes to play it was deja vu all over again. Last week's loss to Vermont Academy saw Landmark blow their lead and panic their way to a loss. (see below) Clearly they learned from that misfortune. Instead of folding their tents they put the ball in the hands of Missy Harris who drained a three to tie the game. She then added 2 more, a couple of foul shots and then Paige Sterling put back a rebound for 2 with three Putney defenders on her arm. It's worth noting that the game the fans and the players played with sportswomanship and dedication the entire game.

Shark Women Can't Seal the Deal VS Vermont Academy Tuesday afternoon our Lady Sharks lost their closest game of the season to Vermont Academy 37 - 30. Our Sharks led for most of the game until the 8 minute mark of the second half. At that time the tide turned and the Sharks were left on the beach. A ten point Shark lead evaporated and turned into a 10-point deficit. What changed?
Missy Drives Well the VA team had been highly disciplined the entire game. Good ball handlers, great passing but the world's worst shooters. VA couldn't hit a bull in the butt with a shovel for most of the game. With us up by 10 they put on a full court press. A full court press takes discipline and that was the strength of the VA squad. Several interceptions turned into layups later and VA cruised to a comfortable victory.
Scout pulls up to shoot
Sam and Maggie watch Missy hit the dirt while Amanda picks up loose ball Missy Harris scored 16 of Landmark's 30 points and was by far the outstanding player of the game. There is only so much one person can do though and by the end of the game she was out of gas. Her scrappy defense and athletic drives to the hoop almost won the day but in the end VA's organized approach and full court press was too much. Look for a rematch here VS Putney School next week. Men's and Women's Basketball Saturday Our Women's team traveled across town to Putney School on Saturday. Putney has a brand new gym and a pretty good team to boot. Our 32 - 23 loss was highlighted by some peaks and valleys from Landmark. Coach Trish Stanley chalked up our loss to "test anxiety" as the women just weren't able to implement their game as they did in practice. Missy Harris was high scorer for Landmark and played her usual tough defense and breakaway speed. Newcomer Margaret Pi showed promise but came to the court with a knee injury suffered at the indoor soccer tryouts. Chris Dumaine didn't have her usual up tempo game while Scout MacEachern made several assists but was held scoreless. Coaches saw plenty to practice as our zone D had enough gaps to drive a hummer through. The team will have a chance at redemption next Tuesday at 4:30 when Vermont Academy women come to Landmark.

Men Manhandled by Lincoln Lincoln College from Southington CT brought a skilled team to the Click Center last Saturday. Our Sharks were outclassed from start to finish as the Lincoln team trounced the Sharks by a score of 97 - 47. The stands were just about full and the cheerleaders were doing their utmost but Lincoln had too many weapons for Landmark. The game began with one team moving in slow motion while the other was on fast forward, stealing errant passes and streaking down the floor for easy layups. Pat Mckinnon was the only Landmark player that was able to penetrate the Lincoln defense and cage some rebounds. Pat's team high 17 points was due to grit and determination as he picked up several baskets by grinding it out in the paint and putting up highly contested shots. Jonathan Getz made his home game debut coming off an ankle injury and proved he could move some bodies around in the paint while scoring a deuce and a trey. Jerome Cole and Noah Caesar were unable to get on track as they were for the most part kept off the scorebook. We'll see Lincoln College again along with Lakes Region CC and Sarah Lawrence College at our season ending tournament.

Noah goes up for two Men's Basketball Sharks Play 2 Over Weekend Our Sharks started their weekend with a game at Vermont Academy in Saxton's River. VA had a team of beefy lads ready to play our newly minted 2012 team. We have several new faces to go with our veterans. Jerome Cole is a fearless and talented forward/center for the Sharks. He can get an offensive rebound in a crowd and put it back through a forest of hands. Noah Caesar 9 (below on the floor) was the answer to Coach Wood's prayers. We desperately needed another guard to back up Dan Brutlag and Noah fits the bill. Fast bringing the ball up with a deadly three-point shot Noah has already had an impact. In fact Noah hit 4 three-pointers in a row in Landmark's 22 point win over Vermont Academy JV's. Galen Riddle brings some height and ball handling skill to the table while newcomer Alex Tayler came on near the end of the VA game and hit a three for his first ever Landmark points. On Landmark's Saturday trip to Lakes Region Community College at Laconia NH. Lakes Region is stacked with talent and they took it the Sharks for an 18 point victory. Coach Wood was at a loss as to what to do with players who were hitting three after three with a guard stuck to their bodies like Kim Kardashian on a rap artist. "They were beyond hot" said coach Wood. Next game Coach Wood will abandon the zone defense and make man-to-man their #1 defense. Change a losing game coach that's what Calipari would do. Lincoln College comes to town next Saturday Feb. 4 for a 2 PM game. This observer sees them as even more talented than Lakes Region.

Sharks Fall to Lakes Region CC Coach Wood was pretty clear about what was in store for our Sharks when the Lakes Region CC squad came to town. LR has won our year end tournament for the past two years and their talent level never seems to vary. McKenna, Benson, Brutlag, Quick and Indarose were the starting 5 for Landmark and they kept up with LR for the entire first half. McKenna and Benson managed to go rebound for rebound with LR forwards and kept it close. The problem came in the second half when Cowels of Lakes Region nailed three 3-pointers in the first 2 minutes of the half. He ended up with 6 treys for the half. So why didn't the Sharks guard this guy? Truth is someone had a paw in his face every time. All of his shots were outside the line and into NBA range. Sometimes a great shot is just a great shot, nothing to be done about it. After falling back by big numbers our guys put in a big push at the end to make the game respectable. Brutlag hit 2 three pointers and McKenna, who never even thinks about quitting continued to pour in twos. The final was 72 - 53. Our next game is at Simon's Rock on Dec. 4 at 1 PM. Wounds will have healed by then.

Lebow lets it fly for 2 Sharks Lay Apocalyptic Thrashing on Simon's Rock You know how we felt about getting thumped by Lincoln College on Saturday? That's how Simon's Rock felt after their men's against us on Sunday. The best tonic for a soundly defeated team is to soundly defeat someone else. It's the old "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet", or something like that. The 62 - 18 thrashing of SR could have been much worse. Coach Wood however, put the bench players on the court for most of the game. The second half was all bench and they got some great experience. Christian Ibsen, who plays with one arm, got his first points of the season with a 2-point set shot followed by a 3-pointer which brought his teammates off the bench cheering. The stands were full of LC fans and they took up the applause moment as well. Another notable factor in Sunday's game was the band. Mr. Glover brought in his jazz band and served up some tunes to soothe the Simon's Rock squad. Thanks Steve, great cowbell. Next Saturday at 2 PM it's back to playing a the big boys when Lakes Region Community College comes to town. They played Landmark in a soccer and basketball double header scrimmage a few weeks ago and let's just say we won the soccer game.

Quick lays it in Lady Sharks Come Close but Lose to SR We led briefly by two early in the second half but the ball stopped falling for the Lady Sharks and Simon's Rock ended the game with a 54 - 44 win. With top player Scout MacEachron facing knee surgery and not available til' next semester the Sharks were lacking the one player who could have turned it around for us. As it was Dumaine and Harris pretty much had to provide all the offense while the rest of the inexperienced crew gave a good effort but clearly need more seasoning. Harris was a gem on both offense and defense. Unfortunately her exuberance ended in a foul out late in the game. At times it seemed like she was trying to do too much. Sharks get a chance for revenge at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington MA on Sunday Dec. 3 at 3 PM.

Chris drives Lincoln College Gaffs Sharks Lincoln College showed up for the home opener on Saturday afternoon and proceeded to point out a few weaknesses in Landmark's game. 88-36 worth of weaknesses to be exact. To be brutally honest the Lincoln players despite not having great height were a very talented group. They played fundamentally sound basketball as they boxed out, caged the defensive rebound, filled the lanes, long pass, alley oop and slam! Ouch. Landmark had nothing to apologize for though. They just didn't have the horses to compete with Lincoln. Not one player on our Sharks gave in or got stroppy at the loss. Pat McKenna and .....got their share of boards and made a few putbacks to keep the fans hollering.

What we needed?......................MORE COWBELL? Soccer Sharks End Season on Winning Note Soccer on Oct. 30 in Vermont can be a tenuous affair. On Saturday just hours before the Nor'easter that buried New England we played a gutsy game of soccer on the swamp at SIT and pulled out a 3 - 1 victory. The thin crust of ice that layered the standing water on the field was soon smashed to bits as players were quickly soaked with icy muddy water. Coach Rob Swinton continues... This Saturday, the Sharks played in their final game of the season against SIT in Brattleboro. The weather already looked quite foreboding by the time the team stepped on SIT's slick field. The team was fueled by the possibility of another win to end this very successful season. After all, the Sharks destroyed SIT at our home field only the week before with an 8-0 domination. Hubris was a danger that would be met with fast thinking and fine footwork.
The game began with a seemingly different SIT than the Sharks had faced seven days ago. They moved a bit more quickly, and their efforts seemed more coordinated. Shortly into the first half, one of the SIT forwards zipped a goal right past keeper Zachary "Ziggy" Benson. The Sharks took it hard, but captains Scott, Hunter, and Church encouraged them to shake it off and keep their heads in the game. The Sharks did, and then, they got hungry. After some great passing by Shark fullbacks and mids, forward Tim Barrett got a hold of the ball, broke through, and showed the SIT goalie how the Sharks play soccer, tying the game until the half.
One on One Early in the second half, midfielders Matt O'Leary and Dillon O'Connor worked together to secure a lead for the Sharks. SIT was holding tight onto O'Leary as he got possession. Still, he was able to cross the ball to the net, where O'Connor was waiting to give the ball the tap into the nylon that it needed to bring the score to 2-1.
Sharks were getting the 50 50 balls. SIT, usually known for their laissez-faire style of play, became much more focused in their efforts. At they gained possession and made for goalie Vincent Jackson, Shark mids and forwards were determined to foil SIT's attempts at a shot on goal. One got through, though, but not far enough. Jackson made one of the most impressive saves of the season, showing SIT that the Sharks were determined to walk away with a win.
Breakaway Late in the game, captain Tevin Hunter added insult to injury as he broke through SIT defense, challenged their keeper, and brought the score up to three. With a few minutes remaining, the Sharks held SIT at bay, ending the game with frozen limbs and fiery pride.
Goalie bats ball clear of melee Throughout the game, impressive plays were had by veteran fullback Scott Barasa, sweeper Mustafa Bilal, and fullback Tom Hoberg on our defensive line. Bilal, in his usual style, made his share of runs, leaving the SIT team to wonder where Bilal had come from and how they could get one of their own. Leading the mids were captain and George Noble Dedication to Team award winner Levi Scott, Maxwell Lyttle, graduating captain Jillian Church, Dillon O'Connor, Will Tower, and Connor Eubanks. Scott Hasselrig and Sam Taylor, new to the team this season, also got in a few licks of their own. Up top, forwards Tim Barrett and Dan Brutlag dominated the SIT defense, setting up shot after shot and supporting the mids as their got their chances. The Sharks ended this outdoor season with snow on the ground and another win in their pocket. The record for this season stands at 7 wins and 2 losses, with wins against every team we faced, save for Hampshire College. The Soccer Sharks will only have one week of break before beginning practice for their mini outdoor season, which begins on November 8th at Indoor Action Sports in Bernardston, MA. We hope to see our loyal fans join us for our Tuesday evening games. Shark X-Country Star Runs Hartford Marathon
Patrick Lathrop in stride. I If you happen to see Pat Lathrop huffing and puffing this week, it's likely because of his accomplishments on the pavements of Hartford, Connecticut this past weekend. On Saturday, October 15, 2011, this PTK scholar-athlete finished in the top 5% of the field of 14,000 entrants and 10th among young male amateurs in the 26-mile plus Hartford Marathon. Pat is a member of Landmark's cross country team. Sharks Plunge to Nadir then Rocket to Zenith Friday’s game against Hampshire College was a brutal one for the Soccer Sharks. Despite the lack of forward Dan Brutlag, the team looked strong. Fresh was the memory, though, of our loss to Hampshire only two weeks before. Resolve was strong, but heads were not in the game. While the Sharks played impressively, we consistently could not break through Hampshire’s midfield and forward line. A nameless Hampshire forward, better known as #11, became the bane of every Shark on the field, but particularly of forwards Tim Barrett, James Callahan, Max Lyttle, and, in a last-ditch effort, James Cronberger. Even at the half down 3 - 0, the Sharks felt that this was a winnable game. To the very last minute, every player on the field, with particular encouragement from captains Tevin Hunter and Levi Scott, gave their all.
In the end, the Sharks walked off the oddly small and uncomfortably muddy Hampshire field with a pride that, although seemingly destroyed, would get the chance for redemption only two days later. On a sunny but chilly Sunday morning, the Sharks lined up for their last home game of the season. Undoubtedly, hurt pride was on the field with the team, but hope and confidence were as well. We were set to take on SIT (School for International Training), a well-seasoned team with players from all over the world. We were determined to walk away with our heads held high. And we did. The Sharks started off strong. It was evident that our passing and communication had greatly improved and that the team had really begun trusting one another again. While captain Levi Scott was benched due to injury, captains Jill Church and Tevin Hunter led the team in passing and ferocity. Our first goal came courtesy of forward Dan Brutlag, which started the team on a roll. By the half, forward Tim Barrett had his second hat trick of the season, the first having come in the October 15th domination of Lakes Region CC. Midfielder Max Lyttle, newcomer to the team this season, was instrumental throughout the game at making those impressive crosses from the outside, setting up our forwards and mids. He even had a few shots on goal himself, but S.I.T.’s only luck came in their ability to somehow stop his shots. The first half also gave fullbacks Tom Hoberg, Scott Barasa, Tevin Hunter, and Geoff Hatchett their opportunity for success. With Hoberg as sweeper and Hunter as stopper, the four worked together to spoil any chance of SIT’s scoring. Goalie Zachary “Ziggy” Benson, had his hands on a few attempts but was able to stop them each time. SIT did come close, hitting the posts two or three times, but scoring proved impossible. At the half, the pride lost in the game against Hampshire seemed to have crawled its way back into the huddle. The second half brought with it four more goals, courtesy of midfielder Connor Eubanks, fullback Mustafa Bilal on a penalty kick, and two from captain Tevin Hunter. Goalie Vincent Jackson faced much of the same attempting on goal that SIT had in the first half, but his quick dives and determination held them at bay. The game ended up in a shutout as the Sharks walked away with 8 goals scored. A formidable foe had been vanquished not by luck but by the skill of a team with determination and dedication. The Sharks will take on SIT on their home turf in Brattleboro in our last game of the season on October 29th. The current Shark record stands at 6-2 for the season. Story by Coach Rob Swinton

O'Connor camps under popup as Ziggy observes. Sharks Lose, Nation Mourns Our Sharks suffered their first loss of the season on Wed. to a talented Hampshire College Team by a score of 3 - 2. We could use the long weekend and the malaise that accompanies the return to work as an excuse, or the weather, or misaligned planets but the truth is that Hampshire had a well disciplined team of talented players. The fact that we came within a goal is very encouraging. After all Team USA has only one win internationally and just lost to Ecuador, a country whose national dish is guinea pig. Despite the loss it must be said that the Sharks had much cooler uniforms as you can see by pics below. OK enough wisecracks for the editor. Here's what Rob Swinton, Shark Coach had to say: Max Lyttle must have had at least 3 or four shots on goal. Lyttle was more than a "lyttle" hungry, but it wasn't enough to secure a successful shot. Mustafa Bilal, despite a hard ball right in the face took only a few minutes to recuperate and was then back in the game. Christine Haselrig, usually on the practice squad, got a few minutes of play in the second half. Reminiscent of Jill Church during the indoor season, Christine was not afraid to take on the biggest Hampshire men and gave a couple of them a serious run for their money. The second half of the game, I benched my usual forwards and tried a bit of a different strategy with Tevin Hunter and James Cronberger up front. Hunter got the first goal with an assist from Cronberger. The second goal came with Cronberger holding off the Hampshire defense, allowing Hunter to bring us to two. I was glad that we got on the board. We should have had a least two more goals, and Hampshire should have had two fewer. The defense became overzealous, moved up WAY to far, and couldn't get back in time. Ronaldo they are not.

Parent's Weekend Crowd Treated to 4-1 Landmark Win The Soccer scheduler showed true psychic abilities as he inserted the Friday soccer match between two days of biblical downpours. Facilities had the pumps out as they siphoned a foot of water off the West side of the field in preparation for the game. Coach Swinton said his team was ready for a mud-fest and it did get fairly swampy at times. Landmark was in fine form for their parent's weekend match up against Marlborough College. Swinton's Sharks were relentless in their attack and after a fairly even first half they put the hammer down and overwhelmed the Marlies with offense. Max Lyttle was the centerpiece of the scoring with a hat trick. Max is one of those players that coach's dream about. Some guys just know where the goal is. They aren't flashy, don't have a thundering shot, they just know how to get to open space, have great anticipation and make no mistake when they get their chance. A sizzling free kick from Mustapha Balil finished up the scoring for Landmark. Mus took a free kick from outside the 18-yard-line and curled an unsaveable shot over the Marlie wall and into the top corner. Part of the reason Landmark was able to keep pressure on the Marlie goal was due to Dan Brutlag and Captain Levi Scott. Both were constantly threatening and making life miserable for Marlie defenders. Unsung heroes played a big part as well. Geoff Stevens at inside Mid and Jill Church at outside left mid played their positions perfectly. Jill was never sucked into the middle and kept herself open on the outside where she made several crosses into the goal box. Geoff knew to mark up every time the ball changed hands and consequently was able to intercept and throw the ball up to the forwards. Tevin Hunter, James Cronberger and Scott Barasa kept the defense as tight as a frog's butt for the entire game with one exception late in the half with a four goal lead. Doubtless they were mentally composing quotes for the press after the game. Next game will be the toughest of the year so far as Hampshire College comes to town on Wednesday Oct. 12 for a 4:30 PM start.

Simon's Rock Loses to Sharks in 1st Home Game Sunday's home opener against Simon's Rock had revenge written all over it. The previous week, the Landsharks had beaten the Rock on their turf with a final score of 3-1. This week, they were out for blood. The action began pretty quickly. Simon's Rock was primed, even after a two hour bus ride to Putney from Great Barrington, Mass.
Dan Brutlag watches his header go just wide of net. The Sharks' first goal was an ugly one. Freshman Max Lyttle (F) got a foot on the ball, took the shot, but didn't give it enough power to hit the net. Newbie Connor Eubanks (Mid), coming from nowhere, followed up and secured the goal. Shortly after, Simon's Rock got their first goal in a trend that lasted most of the game. Dan Brutlag (F) made our second goal, but once again, Simon's Rock closed the gap with one of their own. In the second half, Captain Levi Scott (Mid) was determined to bring home a win. Scott scored; Simon's Rock scored. This tie lasted for much of the second half, and things seemed like they would end this way. With only a matter of minutes remaining, Captain Scott scored our final goal that would ensure our victory. The team held off Simon's Rock until the end, grabbing their third straight victory and their second against Simon's Rock.
Captain Levi Scott scores first of two goals Mustafa Bilal, with his quick thinking and even quicker feet, added some much needed solidity to our defense, working with seasoned fullbacks James Cronberger and Scott Barasa to secure our back end. Starting keeper Zachary Benson, with his newfound serious attitude and dedication, made a great showing in goal, as did freshman Vincent Jackson once Ziggy decided to play slip 'n slide.
Matt O'Leary goes airborne to head the ball to Tevin Our midfield continues to show great strength, especially under the leadership and example of Captains Tevin Hunter, Levi Scott, and Jill "Bring it to Church" Church. Our star forwards, Dan Brutlag, Max Lyttle, and Tim Barrett consistently lead the way on the field with some fresh attitudes and new moves. With a team like this, we feel confident in our plans for continuing this winning streak.

Soccer Sharks Win Opener 4 - 3 After negotiating the flood ravaged route to Marlboro College our Soccer Sharks took the field on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. With James Callahan, Levi Scott, James Cronenberg, Tevin Hunter, Will Tower and Scott Barasa returning from last years team new head coach Rob Swinton had several new players to contend with. Our offense lead by James Callahan was relentless. In the first 20 minutes of the game the Marlboro club had the ball in our end exactly twice. Therein lay the problem. Twice down the field ending up with 2 goals. Our defense was hibernating and badly needed a wake-up call. Fortunately the D tightened up considerably for the remainder of the half while the Landmark offense scored twice. On goal #1 Tevin Hunter ping-ponged a sizzling drive off of forward James Callahan onto a Marlboro defender and into the goal. Score one for James. Shortly afterwards James made it without help as he blasted a shot from the left side just inside the far post. It was 2 -2. The second half began as the first had left off with Landmark applying pressure and hemming the Marlies in. After a nice cross from Tevin Hunter Captain Jill Church nailed a beautiful shot from just over the 18 which curled into the upper corner for a score. It was 3-2. Our final goal came on a direct kick awarded half way between the 18 yard line and the center stripe. Tevin Hunter drilled a low ball that went through a bevy of Marlie defenders and beat their goalie who sprawled in his attempt to stop the shot. Later in the period Marlboro managed to get the ball in our end. Our goalie hesitated to come to the ball and the Marlboro forward cashed in with a nifty pass to the far post where a Marlboro midfielder was there to tip it home. The game was a win but showed up some glaring weaknesses in our team's defense. Our big guys at fullback have got to get in shape so that every opposing foray doesn't turn into a scoring chance. One bright spot on defense was new guy Geoff Stevens who was able to anticipate the Marlie offense and was often there to bar the door. Baseball star Dan Brutlag showed he as soccer skills as well and was going to open space and beating Marlie fullbacks to the ball deep. New kids on the block will hopefully take away a lesson from this game. They cannot dribble through the other team every time they receive a ball. They will soon hear from Coach Swinton that soccer is a team sport and passing is the key to victory. Coach Swinton did an excellent job subbing his players in and out. The very fact that we spent most of the game in the Marlboro end of the field was testament to his ability to recognize when players needed a rest. Fortunately he had some fine offensive horses to keep up the pressure. Wednesday's 5:30 PM scrimmage VS Putney Men should prove very useful in emphasizing the value of team play and pinpoint passing.
